Leagues ApS, the esports tournament operator that ran the UK and Nordics Northern League of Legends Championship (NLC), is shutting down, senior sources have confirmed to The Esports Advocate.
The Danish company, which operated esports platform Leagues.gg and media subsidiary Leagues Media, recently told Riot Games it is ‘no longer in a position to run’ the NLC.
Ramish Hussain, Head of Live Production at Leagues Media, said on Linkedin this week that “due to the company shutting down, my time at Leagues Media has come to an end”.
A senior source confirmed to The Esports Advocate today that all staff have been let go due to the company shutting down.
The company is still listed as active on Denmark’s Central Business Register, but its status is expected to change soon.
The news comes after some staff were laid off last year as part of Leagues ApS’ decision to centralize business operations in Copenhagen. Earlier this year, NLC broadcast talent posted on social media about late payments, unpaid invoices, and being dropped, leaving the NLC streams without anyone to call the matches.
After Leagues ApS told Riot Games it was ‘no longer in a position to operate the NLC’, Riot has been in discussions with potential new partners.
Riot posted an update on X a few days ago, announcing the postponement of the NLC spring split to late April, to give them more time to finalize the league’s setup.
“We understand this disrupts your ability to follow and support your favorite teams, and we’re working to resolve it quickly,” Riot said.
“We’re continuing to assess both the short and long-term structure and stability of the region, with the goal of ensuring teams across the UK, Ireland, and the Nordics have a reliable competitive environment. We’re exploring different options for the format to determine the best path forward.
“We’ll share a full update as soon as the new tournament organizer, format, and dates are confirmed.”
