Former No. 1 Pick in NFL Draft Inks ‘Massive Extension’ Worth 0 Million

With the first overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars surprisingly selected Travon Walker out of the University of Georgia.

The selection drew significant criticism, but Walker has performed well and even earned himself a contract extension that will keep him in Jacksonville for the foreseeable future.

Jaguars Extend Travon Walker’s Contract

On draft night and for the past couple of seasons, the Jaguars received a lot of criticism for drafting Walker over fellow edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, who was selected with the next pick by the Detroit Lions. Although he’s been overshadowed by Hutchinson, he’s still been a key part of the Jaguars’ defense.

In PFSN’s NFL Edge Rusher Impact Metric (EDGEi), he finished the 2022 season ranked as the 32nd best edge rusher with an impact score of 78.2 and a letter grade of C+. In 15 games, he recorded 3.5 sacks, 49 combined tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hits, one interception, two pass defenses, and one forced fumble.

Every year, Walker started to put it together more and more. Following the 2022 season, his EDGEi scores were 79.0 (2023), 79.4 (2024), and 80.2 (2025). Over that period, he’s had 24 sacks, 151 combined tackles, 31 tackles for loss, 47 quarterback hits, five passes defended, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

Following the 2026 season, Walker would have been entering free agency. However, it was announced that the Jaguars have given him a new four-year, $110 million contract.

The deal is structured with $77 million guaranteed, including $50 million at signing, per NFL Insider Adam Schefter:

In 2025, the Jaguars’ defense took a step up from previous years. In PFSN’s NFL Defensive Impact Metric, they ranked as the ninth-best defense with an impact score of 82.4 and a letter grade of B- during 2025. Comparatively, their average impact score for 2022-2024 was 73.5. Their league rankings were 31st (2024) and 14th (2022 and 2023).

This past season, the Jaguars’ defense gave up 19.8 points per game (8th), 218.1 offensive passing yards per game (21st), 85.6 offensive rushing yards per game (1st), 40 total touchdowns, and recorded 32 sacks (27th) as well as 1.8 takeaways per game (2nd).

Despite the comparisons to Hutchinson, Walker has shown consistent growth across the last four seasons. He’s been a big part of the Jaguars’ defense and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Last year, the Jaguars proved they are a Super Bowl contender, and their team is well-positioned to compete for many years to come with young cornerstone players like Walker, Trevor Lawrence, Travis Hunter, and Brian Thomas Jr. in place.
