FORMER WORLD TITLE CHALLENGER VANES MARTIROSYAN DIES AT AGE 39
Glendale, CA (November 23rd, 2025)– Vanes Martirosyan, a former U.S. Olympian and professional boxer, has died at age 39 after a two-year battle with skin cancer. The Armenian-American fighter, who competed from 2005 to 2018, challenged for multiple world titles during his career and stepped in to face Gennady Golovkin for the unified middleweight championship in his final fight in 2018. Martirosyan died from skin cancer, which he had been fighting for two years.
His career highlights include being a 2004 U.S. Olympian. He was a former world title challenger at super-welterweight and challenged for the unified middleweight championship. Vanes (36-4-1 21 Kos) fought notable opponents like Erislandy Lara, Demetrius Andrade, and Jermell Charlo. His final professional fight was challenging for the unified middleweight title against Gennady Golovkin in 2018.
Martirosyan was known for his toughness to fight anyone, at any time, and his elite skill, and is remembered as a symbol of perseverance in the Armenian-American community and the boxing world.
