The Golden Eagles Report: Marquette has already clinched its first losing season in conference play since 2021. That was also the last season before Shaka Smart took over. All of the talk has been about Smart’s policy on transfers and it looks like that will have to change going forward. Speaking of going forward, before Smart finds any transfers in the portal he will have to do everything he can to make sure that star freshman Nigel James Jr returns to Milwaukee for another season. James has been the biggest bright spot of the season in leading the team with 16.1 ppg and 4.9 apg. James is second in the conference in scoring in league play.

Oh just ending another long losing streak and possibly avoiding last place in the Big East is all.

In their first meeting Georgetown ended an eight-game losing streak to Marquette. With a win tonight the Hoyas can end an eight-game home losing streak to Marquette and earn their second ever season sweep of the Golden Eagles (2015). Georgetown last scored a home win over Marquette on Feb. 11, 2017. It was the last victory for former coach John Thompson III before the Hoyas ended that season on a six-game slide.

Cooley Comments: After the last two losses, Ed Cooley had mentioned both John Thompson Jr and James Naismith rolling over in their graves. Cooley made the remark about Thompson after a 93-89 loss to Butler on Feb. 18 in which no real defense was played. Then three days later after both teams shot less than 30% from the field in Georgetown’s 51-47 loss at Seton Hall, Cooley brought up the inventory of basketball. If Cooley continues his rolling over in their graves bit for a third straight game, I’m not sure who he might reference but Dave Gavitt and Al Maguire seem like decent guesses.
