Gautam Gambhir flew back to India, reason still unknown: Reports

Gautam Gambhir, head coach of the Indian National Team, has flown back home in the wake of India’s victory against Australia in the opening Test of a 5-match series in Perth. Such development was rather unexpected because there was no planned use of Gambhir or any other team member to travel back home. Reportedly, Gambhir informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding a ‘personal reason’ that needs him to fly back. It is still not sure when the Indian coach would return but presumably he would join the team ahead of the second Test in Adelaide.

According to a report in Indian Express Gambhi has spoken to the BCCI about his travel plans. The board had no issues accepting his petition.

“Gambhir has informed us that he will be travelling back home and will join the team before the start of the second Test. He has cited personal reasons and the BCCI has accepted his request,” the paper quoted a source as saying.

The Indian team is travelling to Canberra on Wednesday for a two-day pink-ball tour game, but Gambhir won’t be part of that squad for the practice game. The practice match is set to start on Saturday as the team prepares for the day-night Test in Adelaide.

Gambhir hasn’t yet clearly explained the reason for his sudden decision to leave. As the head coach flies back to his country, the Indian team has reunited with its captain, Rohit Sharma, who had missed the first Test in Perth due to the birth of his baby boy.

Rohit was found sharing the Indian dressing room with Gambhir on Day 4 of the Test match series against Australia. The opening batter was also practicing with the pink-ball on the nets on Monday looking to pick few strokes before the match against Adelaide.
