Gautam Gambhir to Assess Mohammed Shami’s Future in Post-Dravid Era

Gautam Gambhir to Assess Mohammed Shami’s Future in Post-Dravid Era

Mohammed Shami, a key figure in India’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, is currently recovering from an ankle injury that has sidelined him for several months. Shami underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon in February, which ruled him out of the IPL and T20 World Cup. However, recent updates on social media show Shami progressing well in his rehabilitation, raising hopes for his return.

The Need for Strategic Decisions

Outgoing Indian bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has stressed the importance of the new management, led by Gautam Gambhir, to carefully consider Shami’s future. At 33, Shami is no longer the youngest pacer in the squad, and his role in the T20I format has diminished. Nevertheless, he remains a valuable asset in ODIs and Tests. Mhambrey believes that Gambhir and his team need to have a thorough discussion with Shami to determine his plans and how best to utilize his skills.

“The staff should talk to Shami and find out what he wants to do. He’s no longer young, so where does he fit in and how many more years does he look to play? How do we use him smartly? I’m sure whoever comes with Gauti [Gautam Gambhir] will find out how to get the best of Shami,” Mhambrey said in an interview with The Telegraph.

Preparing for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

India’s upcoming Test season is packed with high-stakes series, including the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Shami’s presence could be crucial for India’s chances, especially considering the team’s pursuit of a hat-trick of series wins Down Under. Mhambrey emphasized the importance of getting Shami match-fit ahead of the Australia tour, suggesting that he should participate in some of the Tests against Bangladesh and New Zealand in September-October.

“If Tests are the focus now, then make sure he is in the best shape for the series in Australia. However, what Shami wants and what his body says is paramount. But yes, some cricket is needed before the Australia tour as he has had a long break,” Mhambrey added.

Defining Shami’s Role

With 229 wickets in 64 Tests, Shami is a seasoned campaigner for India. Mhambrey pointed out the need to clearly define Shami’s role within the team, whether as a workhorse or a strike bowler. Given the emergence of new pacers, establishing a specific role for Shami could enhance his effectiveness and extend his career.

“Individual fitness varies and can’t be of the same level. So, the players have to be treated differently. You can’t compare a Shami with some youngster who has just come in. You have to understand what the value of Shami is. Do you need Shami to do the Yo-Yo or bowl those many balls in a Test and win India the game?” Mhambrey said.

As the post-Rahul Dravid era dawns, Gautam Gambhir and his support staff face crucial decisions regarding Mohammed Shami’s future. Balancing Shami’s experience with the need for fresh talent will be key to maintaining India’s competitive edge in the upcoming series. Shami’s recovery and readiness for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy could significantly influence India’s prospects, making the next few months critical for the veteran pacer and the team.
