Gautam Gambhir, the coach of the Indian cricket team, had his first talk with the BCCI selectors on Tuesday afternoon, as reported by Cricbuzz. The meeting was organized by BCCI secretary Jay Shah and also included the BCCI selectors led by Ajit Agarkar. The meeting took place over the internet, and Gambhir participated through a video call from his home in New Delhi. The report said that it was a ‘good meeting’ and that there was a ‘thorough discussion’ of ideas.
The report mentioned that Gambhir shared his thoughts on the team for the upcoming limited overs tour in Sri Lanka. The main focus of the meeting was ‘strong commitment’.
According to a report from the Press Trust of India (PTI), it’s likely that Suryakumar Yadav will be chosen as the captain for India’s T20 cricket team instead of Hardik Pandya.
Hardik Pandya is ready to play in the T20 matches against Sri Lanka this month, but it seems that Suryakumar, who led India in eight T20 games against Australia and South Africa last year, is the top choice for the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, and the chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar.
It’s been reported that both Gambhir and Agarkar talked to Pandya earlier today about this decision and told him they are choosing a long-term captain to maintain stability.
The position of T20 captain became available after Rohit Sharma retired from international T20 cricket after India won the World Cup in the West Indies last month.
Pandya, who played a key role in that win, will not participate in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka because of personal reasons. The T20 matches against Sri Lanka will take place from July 27 to 30 in Pallekele, and the ODIs will follow from August 2 to 7 in Colombo.
The team for the upcoming matches will likely be revealed in the next few days.
“Hardik Pandya served as the vice captain for India’s T20 team under Rohit Sharma. He is fully healthy and ready to play in the three T20 matches. He was initially set to be the captain, but there’s a strong belief that SKY could be the skipper not just for the Sri Lanka matches but also until the 2026 World Cup,” a high-ranking BCCI official shared with PTI, asking to remain unnamed.
