Ghanaian teenage midfielder Taufik Seidu made a historic first-team debut for Atletico Madrid in their 2-1 defeat to FC Barcelona in the La Liga on Saturday evening.

The 18-year-old, who has been part of the senior squad under manager Diego Simeone since the start of the 2025/26 campaign, was finally handed his long-awaited opportunity at the Estadio Metropolitano.

Atletico started brightly and took the lead in the 39th minute through Giuliano Simeone, who produced a fine finish to delight the home supporters.

However, the visitors responded quickly, with Marcus Rashford restoring parity just three minutes later before halftime.

The game turned dramatically on the stroke of the break when Nico Gonzalez was sent off for a foul on teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, leaving Atletico to battle the entire second half with ten men.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, the hosts showed resilience and discipline, frustrating Barcelona for much of the second half.

However, their resistance was eventually broken in the 87th minute when veteran striker Robert Lewandowski came off the bench to score the decisive winner.

Seidu was introduced in the 68th minute, replacing Clement Lenglet, marking a significant milestone in his young career.

The Ghanaian midfielder, who joined Atletico’s academy at the age of nine after relocating from Ghana, is regarded as one of the club’s brightest emerging talents.

Although he has represented Spain at various youth levels, Seidu remains eligible to play for Ghana, offering a major boost for the Black Stars’ future prospects.
