Cam Skattebo #44 of the New York Giants looks on prior to the game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.

For whatever reason, the New York Giants have been blowing a lot of smoke coming out of the NFL Scouting Combine.

A wide range of reports have indicated that New York is interested in adding another running back to their already deep stable, including Notre Dame Heisman finalist Jeremiyah Love and reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker.

The funny part is, New York has gotten solid production over the last two years from Tyrone Tracy Jr., and an even more exciting eight games of tantalizing play out of rookie sensation Cam Skattebo before his injury in 2025.

Are the Giants really interested in usurping their in-house two-headed monster?

Giants Making it Known They’re Interested in RBs

According to SNY’s Connor Hughes, the New York Giants are expected to make a serious run at the top of the running back free agent market come March 11, and could even select Love with the No. 5 overall pick.

“Whether they land a player such as Seattle’s Kenneth Walker or Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love remains to be seen, but expect a strong push for established free agent options, including Walker and others. Love is among the prospects they are expected to discuss deeper into the draft process,” wrote Hughes.

“Harbaugh has a clear vision for the team’s offensive identity: run the ball — and then run it again — behind a dominant offensive line. That makes the addition of Greg Roman to the coaching staff particularly notable.”

What is it about Skattebo and Tracy that John Harbaugh and company feel they need to add another name to the running back room?

Both youngsters have shown spurts of greatness in their short NFL careers. Skattebo, in particular, had fans jumping out of their seats whenever he had the ball this past season.

The 105th overall pick out of Arizona State played in eight games throughout 2025 before going down with his ankle injury, and was electric whenever he touched the field.

Skattebo carried the ball 101 times for 410 yards, while also hauling in 24 receptions for 207 yards and seven total touchdowns.

Tracy, in relief of the injured Skattebo, received 174 carries, rushing for 740 yards and two touchdowns.

Maybe both running backs aren’t game wreckers, but together they form a formidable duo. Is there another reason the Giants are letting it be known how interested they are in a new lead back?

Are the Giants Being Sneaky?

It’s entirely possible that the New York Giants aren’t all as interested in adding a new running back this offseason as they’re making it out to be.

Sitting at No. 5 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Giants are just on the edge of landing a high-impact Ohio State defender, such as linebacker Sonny Styles and safety Caleb Downs.

Are they feigning interest in the running back position so a team that’s fallen in love with the Notre Dame star jumps ahead of them on the draft board?

Maybe. Smoke screens are rampant this time of year in the NFL, and you can’t put anything past Harbaugh and his new-look Giants.

It wouldn’t shock anyone in the slightest if they happen to “miss out” on Walker in free agency, only to double down on their pre-draft “interest” in Love.

We won’t know for sure until the NFL draft rolls around.
