The San Francisco Giants had been aggressively looking for an upgrade at second base. They found a temporary solution in Luis Arraez.
ESPN’s Jorge Castillo reported that the Giants agreed to terms with Arraez on a one-year deal. Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase added that Arraez will receive $12 million for 2026 and is expected to play at second base.
Arraez had reportedly considered several offers earlier on Saturday, with a preference to returning to second base. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that Arraez had rejected several multi-year offers to head to San Francisco in order to return to the keystone.
Luis Arraez an intriguing fit for San Francisco Giants
A three-time batting champion and three-time All-Star, Arraez had another solid showing in 2025. He posted a .292/.327/.392 batting line over his 675 plate appearances for the Padres, hitting eight homers and 30 doubles while stealing a career-high 11 bases.
The Giants may be a perfect fit for Arraez. Oracle Park has been the second-most difficult park to hit a home run in over the past three seasons (park factor of 82, league average is 100). However, the Giants’ home is the sixth-best park for singles (park factor of 104) and the 11th-best for doubles (park factor of 102). That history fits the type of player Arraez has been throughout his career.
A one-year deal may not mean that the Giants are a one-year stop for Arraez. Third baseman Matt Chapman had signed a one-year, $18 million contract with the Giants in 2024 before agreeing to a six-year, $151 million extension. If Arraez can perform at his accustomed level, the well-traveled infielder may also find a home in San Francisco.
