Giants HC John Harbaugh Sends Strong Message To Address Kayvon Thibodeaux Trade Rumors

John Harbaugh has enough fires to put out in East Rutherford without entertaining hypotheticals about his pass rushers. The first-year Giants head coach opened voluntary workouts Tuesday with All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence absent after requesting a trade, creating immediate questions about the future of New York’s defensive front.

Harbaugh isn’t letting the uncertainty spread to his edge rushers. When asked about Kayvon Thibodeaux’s trade status, the former Ravens head coach delivered a message that was equal parts endorsement and reality check.

The Giants’ pass-rush depth chart features significant investment. Brian Burns posted 16.5 sacks and earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2025. Abdul Carter showed flashes of brilliance during his rookie season, but Thibodeaux, in the final year of his rookie contract, managed only 2.5 sacks in 10 injury-riddled games.

“I think he’s a great player. I’m excited about him. I was fired up to see him today,” Harbaugh told reporters. “He looks great, in great shape. And I’m thinking about him on the field. I’m thinking about getting him plugged into our defense and getting him rolling.”

“You want to talk about like, well, is he a trade possibility? Everybody’s tradable. Everybody. You know? Even you’re tradable, Dan. If we could get something for you, we’d trade you in a heartbeat, man,” Harbaugh added. “But it’s not really what you focus on. You focus on the fact that we’re having a day. We’re talking ball… our team is coming together as a team, and the business part of it is the business part.”

The irony in Lawrence’s trade demand is that it may actually strengthen Thibodeaux’s job security. If the Giants move their three-time Pro Bowl interior defender, they simply cannot afford to thin out both levels of their defensive line. Burns, Carter, and Thibodeaux represent the only proven pass-rush options on the roster.

New York allowed a league-worst 5.3 yards per rush in 2025 and recorded just 39 sacks. Trading Lawrence would gut the interior, and moving Thibodeaux would leave Carter and Burns as the only proven edge rushers under long-term team control. Harbaugh needs bodies, especially ones who have shown first-round flashes.

Keeping the defensive front intact also protects what matters most: Jaxson Dart’s development. The second-year quarterback showed promise as a rookie, throwing 15 touchdowns against five interceptions while adding nine rushing scores. According to PFSN’s QB Impact Metric, Dart finished the season as the 18th-ranked quarterback in the league with an impact score of 76.5.

With Malik Nabers returning from his torn ACL, the Giants can spend their draft capital on offensive weapons rather than replacing defensive starters they traded away.

The Giants hold the fifth overall pick and could address receiver or offensive line without worrying about defensive reinforcements. That changes entirely if Lawrence and Thibodeaux are both gone.

Harbaugh inherited a 4-13 team with real talent on defense and a young quarterback who believes he can win. The smart play is keeping the front intact, letting new coordinator Dennard Wilson scheme around the pieces, and seeing if a healthy Thibodeaux can rediscover his 2023 form.

New York won’t sneak up on anyone, but a dominant defensive line paired with Dart and Nabers makes them a dark-horse NFC playoff contender.
