Why the Girls On Track program is significant for motorsport development is just one of the topics covered this week in the Driver Development Roundup. I also have details on the secret to a perfect F1 driver-engineer partnership, why consistency is key and much more!

Freddie Slater Explains Why Joining Audi F1 Academy Was the ‘Right Choice’
Audi F1 snapped up one of the most exciting junior drivers around for its first academy signing, welcoming in Freddie Slater. “For me, it was just the right choice. It was the right people,” he said. “Obviously, probability is a big thing of joining an academy, I guess, as well, for getting into Formula 1, because there’s only 22 seats, and also, they’re not always open.”
The Secret to a Perfect F1 Driver-Engineer Partnership: Rob Smedley on Massa, Lewis & Ferrari

Rob Smedley is one of Formula 1’s most respected engineers, known for his work with drivers like Felipe Massa and his time at Ferrari. In this episode, Rob sits down with Jake to share what it really takes to perform at the highest level, from the intense pressure of F1 to the human connections that make success possible.
Rob reflects on his first meeting with Felipe Massa, explaining how belief, structure, and brutal honesty helped Felipe find his first podium. He shares why driver and engineer relationships thrive on trust and transparency, and how tough conversations, done right, can transform performance.
He also opens up about the emotional side of F1, from the heartbreak of Felipe’s 2009 Hungary crash to personal losses that gave him perspective on life and sport. These moments show the human cost of high performance and why managing emotion is as important as managing the car.
Beyond the track, Rob talks about giving back through the FAT Karting League, making motorsport more accessible for thousands of young drivers. This episode is a rare look at leadership, resilience, and the balance between pressure and care at the very top of sport.

Lime Rock Park is thrilled to announce the launch of its Intro to Racing program, a structured entry point onto the main circuit designed specifically for novices and first-time track drivers. Participants use their own street cars and progress through a supervised curriculum that combines classroom instruction and on-track experience.
Seven dates are slated for the 2026 season, with the inaugural session scheduled for Wednesday, April 29.
“When most fans think of Lime Rock Park, they picture the scenes from the grassy hillside, taking in the LIUNA 150 or soaking in the sights and sounds of the Historic Festival,” said Lime Rock Park Chief of Marketing Jamie Kistner. “Those who’ve had the chance know that one of the best seats in the house is behind the wheel of a car – any car. Now, The Park offers a way to get exactly that experience.
“We’re excited to introduce Intro to Racing as a new step in our driver development ladder.” continued Kistner. “This program creates a clear, responsible path onto our road course. Again, with Formula 1, it’s all about timing, as well, timing your next move and all those things. Yeah, it’s going to be really cool to see and watch and follow. I wish him all the best.”

How Girls on Track Marked an Important Milestone
To mark the 10th year of the Motorsport UK Girls on Track program, women of all ages and from all disciplines in motorsport came together to celebrate the success of the scheme and discuss what the future holds.
Progress is clearly happening, but it’s gradual. At its heart, the drive to let more women know there are opportunities within our world is a numbers game. Even if female licence holder figures doubled in a year, the actual number would still be relatively small. Motorsport UK CEO Hugh Chambers, who took the Dare To Be Different project in-house, agrees. “It’s going to take a while,” he acknowledges. “If you increase it by 10% a year, it’s still only one percentage point in the overall scheme of things.”

Red Bull Talent Reveals British Drivers’ Advantage That Helps Them Reaching Formula 1
Arvid Lindblad believes the strong karting series in the United Kingdom helps prepare British drivers for Formula 1. The Racing Bulls driver is the latest graduate from the Red Bull Junior Team to Formula 1. Lindblad explained that he owes a lot to the team’s former top advisor, Helmut Marko, for getting this opportunity.
Another factor he believes helped him improve was the quality of the junior series in the UK. He is one of five British drivers on the grid at the moment alongside Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, George Russell and Oliver Bearman. Alex Albon is also half-British, but he competes under the Thai flag.

Max Verstappen Says Karting is Pricing Out Talent, Explains Why Team Redline Matters
Max Verstappen says his involvement in Team Redline came from a concern he identified during his own racing: real-world karting has become so expensive that talent is being priced out, so sim racing can be a credible pathway into paid careers.
“But the problem is when you have the money, the prices go up and to get the best material… So I feel like people that don’t have the money or the possibilities in general, they are being left out or they just don’t get the right opportunities, people give up.”

Driver Journeys
How Joshua Dürksen Hopes to Inspire All Paraguayan Drivers

The F2 driver, Joshua Dürksen from Paraguay, spoke exclusively to Pit Debrief about his late start in motorsport and the pride of carrying his nation’s flag on the international stage.
“My journey actually, I think it’s quite different to the common journey that a driver has. I started with 11 years old, which is quite late. I raced only three years of go-karting,” he explained. “90% of the races were on the same go-kart track. Because we have only one in Paraguay. 600 metres long and quite bumpy.”

Nikita Bedrin Hopeful GB3 Season Can Propel Him to Formula E Future

Once a rising star in Formula 4 and an F3 race winner, Nikita Bedrin took a step back in 2025 to FR Europe for a campaign that yielded just two visits to the podium. As he moves over to GB3 for 2026, the DS Penske development driver told Feeder Series about how he’s hoping to rejuvenate his career and push himself towards a full-time seat in Formula E.
“There are a lot of things that are out of my control which don’t let me have an open path to Formula 1 right now, so we need to be a bit more open with where I could end up,” he said. “Unless you have massive sponsors backing you up, I don’t think you can get anywhere far right now. Whoever pays more gets the best equipment as well. It’s getting very political right now.”

The New Mercedes Star Who Had an Unconventional Route to Success

Doriane Pin’s journey towards becoming the third champion of Susie Wolff’s all-female F1 Academy has been rather unorthodox. Most drivers who make their name in sportscars do so either as an alternative to pursuing dreams of Formula 1, or once such aspirations have hit the buffers. But for Pin, who checks in with Autosport shortly after turning 22 in January, lessons learned in mid-engined GT3 cars and prototype machinery established the foundations of a promising open-wheel career.
“I always say, if you anticipate more, the less you will be surprised and it’s exactly my approach,” she adds. “Definitely this learning I had in endurance helped me to perform every time I was on track in F1 Academy.”
