In a dominant display of cricket, the Surrey Jaguars triumphed over the Toronto Nationals by a significant margin of 80 runs in the 7th match of the Global T20 Canada at Brampton. The standout performer, Marcus Stoinis, played a crucial role, both with the bat and ball, earning the Player of the Match honors for his all-round brilliance.
Winning the toss and opting to field, the Toronto Nationals had hoped to contain the Surrey Jaguars’ batting line-up. However, Surrey’s innings got off to a steady start despite losing Sunil Narine early for just 2 runs. Kyle Mayers provided a solid foundation with a 27-run contribution off 23 balls.
Although wickets fell at regular intervals, it was Marcus Stoinis who anchored the innings with a powerful 57 off 37 balls, including three boundaries and four sixes. His partnership with Virandeep Singh (23* off 20 balls) helped Surrey post a competitive total of 161/6 in their 20 overs. The Nationals’ bowling was led by Muhammad Rohid and Junaid Siddique, both claiming two wickets each but unable to significantly restrict the scoring rate.
Chasing a target of 162, the Toronto Nationals faced an uphill battle from the outset. Their top order struggled against the disciplined bowling of the Jaguars. Nicholas Kirton (11 off 9) and Unmukt Chand (21 off 17) managed brief resistance.
However, once Sunil Narine struck, the innings began to unravel. Narine was exceptional, claiming 3 wickets for just 5 runs in his four overs, dismantling the Nationals’ batting line-up. Marcus Stoinis continued his impactful day by taking 3 wickets for 19 runs, and Mohammad Nabi chipped in with 2 wickets, further deepening the Nationals’ woes.
The Nationals’ batting collapse was swift and decisive. From being relatively stable at 60/4, they crumbled to 81 all out in just 17.1 overs. Rohit Paudel’s painstaking 10 off 25 balls exemplified their struggles, with no other batsman able to offer substantial resistance. The Jaguars’ bowlers maintained relentless pressure, with Harmeet Singh and Ben Lister also contributing key wickets.
