GT20 Canada 2024 Day 5: Bangla Tigers Mississauga vs Surrey Jaguars Match Report
The Global T20 Canada match 10th took place between the Surrey Jaguars and Bangla Tigers Mississauga at the CAA Centre in Brampton. Surrey Jaguars won the toss and decided to bat first, which turned out to be a lousy decision as the batsmen struggled against the disciplined bowling attack that the Bangla Tigers came up with.
The chase of the Inns of the Surrey Jaguars never really took off as wickets fell at regular intervals. The top order lost its way under pressure with Kyle Mayers and Sunil Narine falling early for 5 and 0, respectively, to David Wiese and Shoriful Islam. Shreyas Movva and Mansab Gill could do little about the stability as Surrey found them in deep trouble at 34/5 inside 8 overs.
A few acts of resistance came from Marcus Stoinis’s 36 and Logan van Beek’s 31, but could not get to a fighting score. While Stoinis played an aggressive innings with 5 boundaries, little support came from the other end; van Beek played an important knock from the lower order. The innings folded up rather precipitately at 101 in 19.5 overs. Of the bowlers, Shoriful Islam returned the best figures, 3/11, with David Wiese contributing significantly as well, returning 2/17, besides two good catches.
Chasing a modest target of 102, Bangla Tigers Mississauga got off to a jittery start as Ben Lister dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz for 4 in the first over itself. An early breakthrough provided Surrey Jaguars with some hope and Narine further added fuel to their hopes by striking twice to dismiss Muhammad Waseem for 14, followed by Pargat Singh, leaving Mississauga at 30/3.
The middle order failed to perform as well; Shakib Al Hasan and Iftikhar Ahmed went cheaply for 1 and 13, respectively. However, David Wiese came up with an important unbeaten 27 off 19 balls, again proving his all-round capabilities. His innings included a maximum and a four which set the Tigers cruising towards the target. Dilon Heyliger provided support bashing a quick 17 off 12 balls that ensured there were no further hiccups in the chase.
His all-round performance helped the Bangla Tigers Mississauga in securing victory with 6 balls to spare. For Jaguars, good performances were shown by Sunil Narine with 3/19 and Marcus Stoinis through his all-round effort of 36 runs and 1 wicket; however, they fell a little short in defending a low total.
GT20 Canada 2024 Day 5: Brampton Wolves vs Vancouver Knights Match Report
In the 11th match of Global T20 Canada, held at CAA Centre, Brampton, on 31 July 2024, Brampton Wolves succeeded in securing a win by 6 wickets with 11 balls to spare against Vancouver Knights. It was a match with very tight bowling coupled with sedate, calculative batting while inching towards the final outcome.
After posting 149/4 in their 20 overs, Vancouver Knights batted first. Contributions to the innings came in the form of Munir Ahmad’s 21 off 19, Usman Khawaja’s 17 off 19, and Reeza Hendricks’ 27 off 30. The real impetus in terms of scoring, however, came from Richie Berrington’s unbeaten 38 off 25 and Asif Ali’s unbeaten 36 off 17, which really accelerated the score in the latter stages of the innings to push the Knights.
The bowlers from the Brampton Wolves, particularly Beau Webster, ensured that they did not score too much; he was the Player of the Match. Webster’s spell of 4 overs, with 16 runs given away and the crucial wicket of Munir Ahmad, helped the Wolves contain the Knights. Thomas Draca contributed 2 wickets for 17 runs in his 3-over spell.
The chase, targetted at 150 for the Brampton Wolves, was shakily initiated. The early wickets of Kobe Herft (2 off 5), David Warner (25 off 20), and Jack Jarvis (3 off 7) pegged them back at 30/3. The team was bailed out by an organized innings from Beau Webster, unbeaten on 49 off 37 balls, and one key partnership with Nick Hobson, whose undefeated 37 came off 28 balls.
George Munsey made a breezy 20 off 12 before falling to Rishiv Joshi. This target was reached in 18.1 overs at 150/4, with the breathing space afforded by Webster and Hobson at the crease. Webster’s all-round performance, including that vital unbeaten knock, earned him the Player of the Match accolade.
There were moments when Vancouver bowlers Sandeep Lamichhane and Dwaine Pretorius each took a wicket, but they couldn’t shut the runs that were coming in the middle and death overs. Pretorius was good, returning figures of 1/30 in his 4 overs, while Lamichhane had a tough day, going for 39 runs in his 3 overs despite taking a wicket.
