Harbhajan Singh and Kamran Akmal recently had an intense conversation on the sidelines of the World Championship of Legends in Birmingham. This interaction stemmed from Akmal’s controversial remarks about Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh during the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, which had sparked significant backlash. Harbhajan had publicly lambasted Akmal for making distasteful comments about Arshdeep’s religion.
Apology and Reflection
In an interview with Paktv.tv, Akmal shared the details of his conversation with Harbhajan, expressing deep regret for his remarks. Akmal said, “I made a mistake, and that was the only topic being discussed. It was never my intention, and I can never think negatively about anyone’s religion. I have made that clear. It should be done because I am younger, they are seniors and a great off-spinner in Indian and world cricket.”
Discussion on Criticism Faced by Babar Azam
During their conversation, Akmal also brought up the criticism faced by Pakistan skipper Babar Azam. He pointed out that Babar had been unfairly mocked, including a previous incident where Harbhajan had laughed during an interaction comparing Babar to legendary cricketer Brian Lara.
Akmal stated, “No doubt, Babar is also a great batsman in Pakistan cricket; he has scored the most hundreds for Pakistan. No doubt, Brian Lara and Babar’s classes don’t match, and they shouldn’t be compared. But as cricketers, we shouldn’t mock anyone. So I talked about it, and he (Harbhajan) also agreed that it shouldn’t have happened from his side either.”
Mutual Agreement on Respect
The conversation between the two former players underscored the importance of maintaining respect and decorum in cricket, especially when discussing the current generation of players. Harbhajan and Akmal both acknowledged that former stars should avoid making disparaging comments about their successors, promoting a more supportive and respectful cricketing environment.
