The uncertainty surrounding Hardik Pandya’s place in the Indian ODI squad has intensified following recent revelations from a BCCI official. The conversation between India head coach Gautam Gambhir and all-rounder Hardik Pandya during a crucial selection meeting has shed light on the challenges Pandya faces in maintaining his position in the team.
Pandya’s Struggles and Team Management’s Concerns
Hardik Pandya has faced ongoing struggles with injuries, which have impacted his ability to consistently perform and maintain fitness. These concerns have weighed heavily on the minds of the selectors and the coaching staff. Despite being a key player, Pandya’s decision to take a voluntary break from the Sri Lanka ODIs was not well-received by some members of the selection committee.
The selectors have communicated their expectations clearly to Pandya. While acknowledging his value as a fast-bowling all-rounder, they emphasized the need for him to be fit enough to bowl his full quota of 10 overs in ODIs. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has previously stated that all players must participate in domestic cricket to make a comeback to the national team post-injury, with certain exceptions granted only to a few senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah. Pandya, however, does not fall into this privileged category.
Gambhir’s Directive: Prove Fitness in Domestic Cricket
During the call, Gambhir reminded Pandya of the importance of demonstrating his bowling fitness by participating in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Baroda. Gambhir’s message was clear: Pandya needs to prove he can handle the physical demands of ODI cricket if he wants to secure his spot in the squad.
“Hardik was also reminded by Gambhir on the call that he was looking forward to seeing him bowl his full quota in ODIs,” a BCCI official revealed.
The BCCI’s press release further stated their intent to monitor player availability and participation in the upcoming domestic cricket season.
Pandya’s Recent Form and Fitness Challenges
Pandya has not played any 50-over cricket since the 2023 ODI World Cup, where his campaign was cut short due to an ankle injury sustained while bowling against Bangladesh. The injury sidelined him for four months, and he missed the South Africa tour.
He made his return by playing the entire IPL season and was a crucial part of India’s T20 World Cup squad, showcasing his importance in the shorter format. However, the selectors and coach Gambhir remain unconvinced about his readiness for the rigors of ODI cricket.
Next Steps for Pandya
Pandya’s immediate opportunity to prove his fitness will come in the three ODIs against England in January. However, his real test lies in the domestic season, where his performances will determine his inclusion in the squad for the Champions Trophy in February next year.
