Head Coach Andy Flower Answers If Virat Kohli will Return as RCB Captain for IPL 2025?

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are gearing up for a new chapter in the IPL 2025 season, but their captaincy situation has sparked widespread speculation. After releasing Faf du Plessis ahead of the mega auction, the franchise finds itself searching for a new leader. While reports have linked Virat Kohli to the captaincy role, RCB head coach Andy Flower remains tight-lipped.

“Well, you’re going to have to wait for the outcome. It’s a new era we’re stepping into, the start of a three-year cycle. I’m sure the anticipation will keep things interesting for you,” Flower said. “You can ask me as often as you like, but that communication has not happened yet.”

RCB’s auction picks for IPL 2025 have left fans intrigued, especially with Kohli being the most obvious choice for captaincy. Speculation around Rajat Patidar taking up the leadership role also did the rounds, but Flower clarified that no decision has been made yet.

Kohli’s Current Form and Future Prospects

Virat Kohli, who recently featured in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has had a mixed run with the bat. He scored 190 runs across five Tests and will soon be seen in action in the upcoming ODI series against England, starting February 6.

Kohli remains central to RCB’s plans. The former skipper has been a cornerstone of the franchise, leading them to two IPL finals. However, the elusive title remains missing from RCB’s trophy cabinet. With a strong squad in place, the franchise will be hoping to break their title jinx in the upcoming season.

Building a Power-Packed Lineup for IPL 2025

Under Andy Flower’s guidance, RCB have crafted a formidable batting lineup. Their strategy in the mega auction focused on bolstering the batting order with power hitters and versatile options. Flower hinted at a more aggressive approach this season.

“There were two really obvious areas we felt needed addressing, and we’ve selected batters with a lot of power,” Flower said, discussing the team’s auction strategy.

Opening Pair to Watch: Kohli and Salt

One of the key talking points for RCB in IPL 2025 is their potential opening partnership. Flower suggested that Phil Salt could join Kohli at the top of the order.

“If you look at the potential lineup, Phil Salt, known for his aggressive opening prowess, could partner with Virat Kohli at the top,” Flower remarked.

Kohli, retained for INR 21 crore, will likely continue to open the innings for RCB. He had a stellar IPL 2024 season, winning the Orange Cap with 741 runs. Salt, acquired for INR 11.50 crore after an impressive stint with KKR, adds firepower to the opening pair. The Englishman’s aggressive style complements Kohli’s consistency, making them a formidable duo.

Middle-Order Stability with Patidar and Livingstone

Rajat Patidar, retained for INR 11 crore, is expected to take the crucial No. 3 spot. Patidar has been a revelation for RCB, scoring consistently in the past two IPL seasons. His performances in domestic cricket have also been noteworthy, making him a potential future captain for the franchise.

Liam Livingstone, purchased for INR 8.75 crore, adds depth and versatility to the middle order. Though his recent IPL seasons were underwhelming, his ability to clear boundaries and contribute with the ball makes him a valuable asset. His international form has been promising, and RCB will be counting on him to deliver in pressure situations.

Lower Middle-Order Firepower: Jitesh Sharma and Tim David

To strengthen their lower middle order, RCB acquired Jitesh Sharma and reacquired Tim David. Both players bring finishing power and adaptability to the team.

“Jitesh Sharma is an exciting young wicketkeeper-batsman who’s been remarkable in the domestic circuit. He brings an exciting dynamic to our side,” Flower said.

Jitesh, bought for INR 11 crore, is expected to bat at No. 5. His finishing ability, showcased in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he scored at a strike rate of 225.00, makes him a key player in high-pressure situations.

Tim David, reacquired for INR 3 crore, will likely take the No. 6 spot. Known for his powerful hitting and experience in T20 leagues worldwide, David’s role in the death overs will be crucial for RCB’s success. His familiarity with the franchise, having debuted with RCB in 2021, adds to his value.
