1. 333 vs Sri Lanka, Galle, 2010
An incredible triple-century by the ‘Universe Boss’ saw the West Indies cross the 500-run mark. Gayle hit a total of 34 boundaries and 9 sixes in his astonishing knock. Thanks to the knock, West Indies posted a total of 580/9 before declaring. In reply, Sri Lanka got bowled out for 378 in their first innings and were given the follow-on. However, the Sri Lankan batters managed to survive on the final day and finished at 241/4 as the match was drawn.
2. 317 vs South Africa, St. John’s, 2005
After a scintillating display of batting from the Proteas which saw them post a mammoth total of 588/6 before declaring, it was the hosts’ turn to show their batting masterclass. They were led by Gayle who went on to score a magnificent triple-century. Alongside him, Darren Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dwayne Bravo also scored centuries to take West Indies’ total over the 700-run mark. The hosts’ inning get would come to an end at 780 runs.
3. 215 vs Zimbabwe, Canberra, 2015
Gayle became the first-ever batter to score a double-century in ODI World Cup history with this amazing knock. After losing opener Dwayne Smith early, Gayle along with Marlon Samuels went on to form a partnership for the ages and destroyed the Zimbabwean bowling attack with their fantastic hard-hitting. Gayle would lose his wicket on the final ball of the innings on 215 and Samuels would remain unbeaten on 133 as the Windies went on to post a huge total of 372/1 in 50 overs.
4. 204 vs New Zealand, St. George’s, 2002
After New Zealand posted a good total of 373, Gayle took it upon himself to ensure that his side didn’t fall behind the opponents. His double-century saw West Indies cross the 400-run mark and finish on a total of 480. This meant that they took a decent 97-run lead over the Black Caps ahead of the second innings. However, the match would end in a draw as the New Zealand batters posted an incredibly slow 256 runs in 131 overs as the final day came to an end.
5. 197 vs New Zealand, Napier, 2008
With the West Indies trailing by 64 runs against New Zealand in the second innings of the Test, Gayle took the responsibility of carrying his side to a good enough total so that they can set up a good enough target for the Kiwis. He managed to complete this objective with his tremendous knock of 197. His knock included 20 boundaries and 7 sixes as West Indies got bundled out for 375, setting up a target of 312 for the Black Caps. The match would end in a draw as New Zealand finished the final day on 220/5.
