Historic SEC Team Loses 16 Players to Transfer Portal

According to On3, more than 800 players are set to enter the transfer portal once it officially opens on Jan. 2.

It’s an aspect that’s completely changed college football since it was introduced in 2018. For many teams, it’s a way to build a strong roster. However, it can just as easily tear a program down.

That even includes teams in college football’s top conferences, such as the SEC. The Auburn Tigers continue to feel the negative effects of the transfer portal ever since their 2025 season ended. After going just 5-7 and bringing in a new head coach, Alex Golesh, players continue to jump ship.

On Friday, Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett reported that Auburn defensive lineman Amaris Williams plans on entering the transfer portal. That marks the 16th player the Tigers are set to lose.

In two seasons, Williams has accumulated 21 tackles, 2.5 sacks and six tackles for loss. Coming out of high school in the 2024 cycle, he was a four-star prospect and the nation’s No. 64 recruit.

He’s now the third defensive lineman Auburn will lose. He’s joined by former four-star Malik Blocton and four-star Antonio Coleman. A defensive unit that allowed 20.7 points per game in 2025 (tied for 32nd in the nation) continues to lose talent.

As Golesh looks to rebuild the Tigers and give them their first winning season since 2020, the transfer portal continues to weaken the roster. 16 likely won’t be the final total either, with the portal remaining open until Jan. 16.

Golesh’s ability to replace the talent and use the portal to his advantage will be a major factor in his first season with Auburn.
