As the ONE Active Hockey One season reaches its thrilling finale, the Perth Thundersticks Women’s team are sticking with a largely unchanged squad as they prepare to defend their crown.
The Thundersticks secured the final spot in the Championship series in dramatic fashion, ending NSW Pride’s unbeaten run in a Round Seven showdown at Perth Hockey Stadium.
Heading into the Finals in Melbourne, the Thundersticks have made two additions to their line-up: Lexie Pickering and Camila Vaughan.
Pickering returns after missing Rounds Five and Seven due to concussion, while Vaughan joins as a second goalkeeper and could make her debut in Thundersticks colours.
This weekend marks the Thundersticks’ fourth consecutive appearance in the Championship mix.
Saturday’s Semi Final will see them face minor premiers NSW Pride in a highly anticipated rematch.
After their nail-biting 6-5 victory in Round Seven – thanks to the heroics of Madi Ratcliffe – the Thundersticks will be aiming to replicate that performance and move one step closer to claiming a second straight Hockey One Women’s Championship.
Depending on Saturday’s result, Sunday will pit the Thundersticks against either Adelaide Fire or Hockey Club Melbourne for a medal.
Earlier this season, Perth fell narrowly to both sides – 2-4 against the Fire in Round Three and 1-2 against HC Melbourne in Round Four.
With momentum on their side, can the Thundersticks rewrite the script and finish on top? Time will tell.
