‘Hope Abhishek doesn’t produce the same kind of knock’, England wary of T20’s No 1 batter

England all rounder Sam Curran has said his side remain cautious of Abhishek Sharma despite the opener’s inconsistent form before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi final against India.

Abhishek has scored 80 runs across six innings in the tournament. He began with three consecutive ducks, then made 15 from 12 balls against South Africa.

He responded with 55 from 30 deliveries against Zimbabwe before scoring 10 from 11 balls against West Indies.

The left hander struck 135 from 54 balls against England at the Wankhede Stadium in 2025 and returns to the same venue for the semi final.

“Well, at the moment our main focus is Thursday night. Of course, I hope Abhishek doesn’t produce the same kind of knock again. But we are very well prepared for the game, and our attention is firmly on Thursday night,” Curran said at the pre match press conference.

Sharma is still ranked No 1 in the ICC T20 batsman rankings, ahead of England Phil Salt – who has also endured a lean tournament campaign. Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan who is currently the T20 World Cup’s top scorer, is ranked third.
