Houston tennis preview, pick, and prediction: Tiafoe vs. Paul
Andrew Patron/Delray Beach Open

Frances Tiafoe will be playing in the semifinals of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship for a fourth straight year on Saturday. Standing in his way of a fourth final appearance is fellow American Tommy Paul.

This marks the seventh showdown between Tiafoe and Paul. The head-to-head series is all tied up at 3-3, although Paul leads it 3-1 on the main tour. They have not faced each other on clay since 2015 and they have not squared off at all since 2024, when Paul prevailed 6-2, 6-2 in the Delray Beach semis.

Although clay is by no means Tiafoe’s favorite surface, he obviously loves life in Houston. The world No. 18 is 15-6 lifetime at this event with one title and two runner-up finishes. He is back in another semifinal following victories over Rinky Hijikata and Alexei Popyrin. Against Popyrin on Friday night, Tiafoe saved one match point before triumphing 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(6) in two hours and 47 minutes.

Even in Houston, the chips may be stacked against Tiafoe on Saturday. Similar to his compatriot, Paul is extremely adept on the red stuff even if it is far from his favorite surface. So far this week the world No. 21 has defeated Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo and Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry, two stellar clay-court players. Paul impressively destroyed Etcheverry 6-4, 6-2 in the quarters and wrapped things up many hours before Tiafoe outlasted Popyrin.

Paul has the rest advantage and also the edge in current form. The fourth seed should advance to the championship match and is looking like the title favorite.

Pick: Paul in 2
