The women’s doubles final at Brisbane 500 is set and there is a very interesting angle factor involved.
Ellen Perez with Cristina Bucsa) will face Jelena Ostapenko and Su-wei Hsieh.
Astute tennis observers may know that Hsieh parted ways with coach Paul McNamee after nine years and nine Grand Slam titles, not to mention two separate reigns as world no. 1 for Hsieh.
Aussie Perez hired McNamee to be her new coach and so now Hsieh will have to deal with the player and coach who knows her best. Now 40 years old Hsieh was a mere journeywoman player before McNamee constructed her into one of the elite players of her era.
Hsieh is seeking her 36th WTA doubles title. Hsieh and Ostapenko lost in the 2025 Australian Open and Wimbledon women’s doubles finals last year. They also lost in the finals of 2025 in Dubai. Hsieh finished 9 in the world last year but did not win any titles with Ostapenko.
Hsieh played 2025 US Open with Ashlyn Krueger but they were defeated in the first round by Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.
It will be a fascinating doubles final clash in Brisbane for many reasons.
