“I believe that everything…”Washington Sundar makes a bold statement ahead of the 3rd ODI against Srilanka

Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar believes that the crucial third and final one-day international (ODI) match against Sri Lanka offers a significant chance to prepare for the spin challenges they might face in tough conditions. This preparation is important as they look ahead to next year’s Champions Trophy. The Indian team is at risk of losing its first ODI series against Sri Lanka in 27 years, following a 32-run defeat in the second ODI due to the poor performance of the batsmen, who struggled against Sri Lanka’s spin bowlers. Sundar said, “This is a chance for us to step up and win those important moments,” during a press conference before the match.

“With major tournaments on the horizon, we’ll likely face similar situations, and it’ll be crucial to figure out how to win those key moments, especially in conditions like these against strong spin attacks,” Sundar added.

“I believe that everything we’ve experienced in this series so far will help us learn and improve. We aim to use this knowledge to win the game tomorrow in every aspect.”

Sundar also supported the batters, who have struggled against the spin bowlers in this series.

“We are skilled players against spin. We’ve played on these types of pitches before, both at home and in Test matches, as well as in various formats. Even in domestic cricket, we’ve played many games on similar pitches,” he explained.

“Many of our players have performed well, particularly in the middle order, when batting against spin. It’s just a matter of finding a method that works for each individual and getting the job done.”

“Everyone agrees that this pitch is quite difficult. The Indian team has always stepped up, especially when facing tough challenges. That’s when we’ve performed really well, both in batting and bowling, and we’ve managed to succeed in difficult situations,” he explained.

“This is what the Indian cricket team has been known for in recent years. I think it’s the same in this series too. It’s all about finding individual solutions and getting the job done.” The 24-year-old mentioned that the team has made tactical adjustments based on advice from the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir.

“Gambhir has provided a lot of input. He’s really good at playing against spin bowling. We’ve often seen him perform very well, particularly on pitches like these where the spin is challenging.

“That’s why we came out today to practice, to figure out some strategies and make small adjustments. We want to be ready and perform at our best in all areas for tomorrow’s match,” Sundar explained.

Sundar, who played a key role in India’s victory in the third T20I in Pallekele by winning the game in a thrilling Super Over, mentioned that he aims to take full advantage of the chances he gets. “It’s crucial for me to perform well with the bat and help the team succeed, especially by winning games, particularly when I get a chance to bat.

“I believe I’ve had two good chances in this series so far, and I’m really excited to help the team, especially with my batting, especially when we’re trying to chase a target and the situation is tough,” he said.

Discussing his game, Sundar mentioned that he made some minor adjustments to his bowling, focusing mainly on achieving a good rhythm.

“I’m a hard worker and I always look for ways to succeed and contribute to the team.

“When I thought about my bowling, I realized I needed to make a few small changes, not big ones, just adding a couple of extra elements and doing some things more frequently and effectively,” he explained.

“It’s mostly about finding the right rhythm and a bit about the technical aspects. I believe that when I get my rhythm and techniques right, many things work out well for me, especially in my delivery.”
