Gautam Gambhir has outlined his objectives since becoming the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. The ex-Indian batsman discussed fostering a positive team environment and building on India’s recent success in the T20 World Cup 2024, which they won in the Caribbean and the United States. Gambhir, who succeeded Rahul Dravid, emphasized that he aims to keep things simple.
Gambhir gained significant attention after guiding the Knight Riders to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024. The experienced coach is pleased to lead a “champion” team that was the runner-up in the World Test Championship, the ODI World Cup, and then won the T20 World Cup.
Before leaving for Sri Lanka to play in the One Day International and Twenty20 International series, Gambhir went to a meeting with reporters together with the person in charge of choosing the team, Ajit Agarkar.
Gambhir said, “I’ve always believed that a team is more likely to win if everyone in the locker room is happy. That’s what I need to focus on. I don’t like to make things too difficult. I’m joining a team that has done really well. They were the winners of the T20 World Cup, came in second in the World Test Championship, and also in the 50-over World Cup. There are some things we need to work on, but this is a team of champions.”
Gambhir talked about the good relationship he has with Jay Shah, who is the secretary of the BCCI. He mentioned that his personal goals are not as important as the success of the Indian cricket team.
“I’ve had a great relationship with Jay Shah. There have been many rumors about various things. We can do a better job of explaining those things. Gautam Gambhir is not important; what’s important is improving Indian cricket. I’ve really enjoyed working with him, and I hope this continues,” Gambhir said.
India’s cricket tour in Sri Lanka begins on Saturday, July 27, with the first T20 match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
