Ibrahima Konate and Liverpool have “never been closer to an agreement” over a new long-term contract, according to reports in France.
Konate is on the cusp of becoming a free agent with his current deal expiring at the end of the season, heightening the importance of a decision, one way or another.
It was recently reported on Merseyside that “staying at Anfield is currently viewed as more likely than him leaving,” which has now been furthered by reports in France.
As per L’Equipe‘s Hugo Delom and Loic Tanzi, deemed reliable for French players, negotiations have “intensified in recent months” between the two parties and they “have never been closer to an agreement.”
It is stated that “only a few details remain to be ironed out,” which would be a significant development in talks that have been ongoing for more than 18 months.

Konate wants to leave for the summer World Cup with his future sealed, meaning a decision is needed in the coming weeks, though that almost goes without saying.
And although clubs in Spain, like Real Madrid, are known to have “presented their proposals” as Konate is free to talk to foreign clubs, the “prevailing sentiment remains the same: an extension” with Liverpool.
Liverpool’s No. 5 currently earns a wage of around £150,000 per week but wants a significant rise on that figure, which has been central to talks with the club, who prioritise their wage structure.
The 26-year-old is seeking a figure that brings him in line with some of the club’s highest earners, reflective of his standing as a regular alongside Virgil van Dijk.
At a time when there is significant uncertainty over Arne Slot‘s future and that of sporting director Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards, an extension for Konate would be most welcome.
While there has been criticism regarding his form, he is still in his prime years, and an extension will not leave him without competition, as the likes of Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni will push for minutes.
