´If Nagelsmann calls me, he really has a problem´ – Muller shuts down talk of Germany return

Thomas Muller has shut down suggestions he could return to the Germany fold, saying coach Julian Nagelsmann would need to have a “major problem” to reach out to him.

Muller called time on his storied international career after Germany reached the quarter-finals on home soil at Euro 2024, where they lost to eventual champions Spain.

The Bayern Munich icon scored 45 goals in 131 games for his country, with only Miroslav Klose (71), Gerd Muller (68), Lukas Podolski (49), Rudi Voller and Jurgen Klinsmann (both 47) ever netting more for Germany or West Germany (Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also scored 45).

Lothar Matthaus (150) and Klose (137), meanwhile, are the only two players to represent Germany more often than Muller.

Muller left his homeland for the Vancouver Whitecaps last year and has made an immediate impact in MLS, scoring nine goals in his first 12 outings in the competition and helping his new side reach the 2025 MLS Cup final, which they lost to Inter Miami.

But with Nagelsmann able to list Nick Woltemade, Deniz Undav, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, Florian Wirtz, Kai Havertz and Lennart Karl among his attacking options, Muller told MagentaTV there was “zero” chance he would play for Germany again.

“I generally enjoy theoretical scenarios,” Muller said. “I’ve got my football boots with me!

“If he calls me, then he’s lost it and really has a problem. How many players would have to be out? Like 15 attackers?”

Germany will face Switzerland and Ghana in friendly matches during the current international break, before taking on Finland and the United States in further warm-up games at the end of the club season.

They then take on World Cup debutants Curacao – the smallest nation by both population and area to qualify for the tournament – in their first Group E game on June 14.
