“In my books it all counts for…”: Tabraiz Shamsi’s emotional post after T20 World Cup final defeat against India

South Africa’s journey in the T20 World Cup 2024 was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. After shaking off their long-held “chokers” tag with a dominant run to the final, they fell short at the last hurdle, losing to India by a narrow margin of seven runs.

South Africa’s dominant streak crushed by Indian bowling prowess

The Proteas entered the final undefeated, having emerged victorious from several tense encounters. Their confidence was high, and with 30 runs required from the last five overs, a historic win seemed within reach. However, the Indian bowling attack, spearheaded by the ever-reliable Jasprit Bumrah, staged a remarkable comeback. The crucial wickets of Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen swung the momentum decisively in India’s favour.

David Miller’s dismissal: The turning point

With David Miller at the crease and 16 runs needed off the final over, a glimmer of hope remained for South Africa. However, Suryakumar Yadav’s spectacular diving catch at the boundary line ended Miller’s innings and effectively dashed South Africa’s title aspirations. This defeat marked the closest the Proteas have ever come to claiming an ICC trophy, having previously suffered seven heartbreaking semifinal exits in global tournaments.
