India Hockey Team Reduced to 15 Players for Semifinal Clash

Before stepping into the semifinal match, the Indian Hockey team faced a major setback. even after defeating Great Britain in the quarterfinal, they faced a major setback before the upcoming big match. The International Hockey Federation has given defender Amit Rohidas a one-match suspension for misconduct. As a result, the Indian team will now have only 15 players available for the upcoming semifinal clash.

Why India Will Face Germany with 15 Member Squad?

 India aims to reach the finals and end a 44-year drought. They will face Germany in the semifinals after defeating Great Britain to qualify. However, the Indian men’s hockey team has been dealt a setback. Defender Amit Rohidas has been suspended for one match due to misconduct, leaving the squad with only 15 players.

India defeated Great Britain to advance to the semifinals at the Paris Olympics, despite playing with only 10 players for over 40 minutes. Amit Rohidas received a red card for allegedly trying to injure a British player intentionally.

During the second quarter, Rohidas attempted to take the ball from British forward Will Calnan. Unfortunately, his swing with the hockey stick struck Calnan’s face, leading to his ejection from the game.

After that, FIH gave a statement and said that India would play with a 15-member squad. The statement said, “ “Amit (player No.30 of India) was suspended for one (1) match for a Breach of the FIH Code of Conduct which occurred during match no. M32 India v Great Britain on 4th August, 2024.”

Later it added about India’s participation with the 15-member team in the upcoming semifinal game. It said, “ “The suspension affects match no.M35 on 6th August 2024, where ROHIDAS Amit will not participate, and India will play with a squad of fifteen (15) players only.”

Big Setback for India Before the Big Match:

Team India is poised to make history with their strong performance and is preparing to face Germany. However, a major setback has occurred with Amit Rohidas’s suspension. His absence will have a significant impact on the team, especially on their defense and short-corner tactics.

Rohidas is known for his exceptional rushing skills in penalty-corner defense. His departure leaves India with fewer options for drag-flickers and rolling substitutions. Chief coach Craig Fulton will need to adjust the team’s short-corner strategy to compensate for Rohidas’s absence. Fans are all set to cheer the team on their big day.
