India register several unwanted Test cricket feats in New Zealand Test

The Black Caps had a field day against the Indian batters on the second day of the first Test in Bengaluru. Things went on a downward spiral for the hosts as soon as skipper Rohit Sharma decided to have a bat first after winning the toss in overcast conditions.

Indian openers Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal struggled against the Kiwi pacers from the get-go and eventually Rohit ended up losing his wicket to Tim Southee for 2 runs. Then, Virat Kohli would be dismissed for his 38th international duck by young pacer Will O’Rourke.

One-by-one all Indian batters ended up losing their wickets for low scores and eventually the hosts got bundled out for a mere 46 runs some time after the second session started.

It was the pacers who did the job for the visitors as Matt Henry picked up 5 while O’Rourke picked up 4 and Southee chipped in with one as well.

This score has now become India’s lowest-ever Test total at home and it is also the first time that they failed to even score 50 runs in a Test inning.

Also, in this inning, it was the first time in history that India lost 4 of their top 7 batters in the order for ducks. In total 5 batters were dismissed for ducks namely – Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin.

This is also India’s third-lowest total in Test cricket behind their total of 36 against Australia in Adelaide in 2020 and their total of 42 against England at Lord’s back in 1979.
