India’s thrilling seven-run win over England in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal at Wankhede was not just dramatic. It turned into one of the most record-heavy matches ever seen in the tournament.
India posted 253/7, the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup knockout match. It is also the fourth-highest total in the tournament’s history, underlining the scale of the batting display on a flat Mumbai surface.
The game produced a combined 499 runs, the highest aggregate in T20 World Cup history and the second-highest in all T20 internationals. England’s 246/7 in reply also became the highest total ever scored against India in T20Is.

India continue to push scoring limits in the format. The team now has six totals of 250 or more in T20 cricket, the most by any side. Three of those massive scores have come in T20 internationals during 2026 alone.
Six-hitting was the defining feature of the match. A total of 34 sixes were struck, 19 by India and 15 by England, the most ever in a T20 World Cup game.
India’s 19 sixes also matched the record for the most by a team in a single T20 World Cup match. Across the tournament, India have now smashed 88 sixes, the most by any team in a single T20 competition.
England’s bowlers struggled to contain the barrage. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid became the first bowler in T20 internationals to concede more than 200 sixes in his career, reaching 203 during this tournament.
Rashid has also conceded 18 sixes in this World Cup, which equals the record for the most by a bowler in a single edition. Fast bowler Jofra Archer had a tough outing as well, conceding seven sixes in the match, joint most by any bowler in a T20 World Cup game.
Despite the defeat, England’s Jacob Bethell produced a historic knock. His 105 became the highest score ever in a T20 World Cup knockout match.
Bethell reached his fifty in just 19 balls, joint fastest in a T20 World Cup knockout game and the quickest for England in the tournament’s history.
His century also placed him in rare company. It is only the third hundred in World Cup history, across ODI and T20 formats, to come in a losing cause, after Chris Gayle in 2007 and Yuvraj Samra earlier in the 2026 edition.
The young batter also achieved a unique milestone. Bethell is the first cricketer whose maiden first-class, List A and T20 centuries have all come in international cricket.
Not everything went India’s way in the numbers column. Varun Chakaravarthy’s figures of 0/64 were the joint second most expensive in a T20 World Cup match and also among India’s costliest spells in T20 internationals.
Still, India held their nerve in the final overs to seal a place in the final. The semifinal will be remembered as one of the most explosive matches the tournament has ever seen.
