Day 5 at Indian Wells delivered the start of the Round of 32 and saw Jannik Sinner recover from an ugly opening game to take care of Denis Shapovalov with minimal fuss.
The headline storyline was João Fonseca backing up his Khachanov escape with a dominant win over Tommy Paul to set up a first-time meeting with the World No. 2.
Elsewhere, Learner Tien continued his rise, outlasting Ben Shelton in an all-lefty, all-American battle, while Alexander Zverev had to graft past Brandon Nakashima to reach a milestone 100th Masters 1000 win of the decade.
Here are the full results, key matches, and what’s coming up on Day 6.

Key Matches

(2) Jannik Sinner def. Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-2
Sinner overcame a cagey start (dropped serve to love in the opening game) but quickly settled, responding immediately and showcasing brilliance in the second set with stunning passes.
The World No. 2 sealed victory in 71 minutes, improving to 2-1 in their H2H and extending his streak against left-handers to 19 wins.
Sinner praised Shapovalov’s quality but was happy with his aggression: “I tried to stay solid… but also a bit more aggressive in the second set.”
Solid stuff from the Italian, and while I don’t think this is his best tournament/conditions, is anyone other than Alcaraz capable of stopping him?
Next: Joao Fonseca (first H2H).
Joao Fonseca def. (23) Tommy Paul 6-2, 6-3
In a dominant 1-hour-22-minute performance on Stadium Court, the 19-year-old Brazilian powered past the American to reach his first ATP Masters 1000 fourth round.
Following his dramatic MP-saving win over Khachanov and less than a 24-hour turnaround, I thought Paul was the favourite, but he looked to be struggling with some sort of leg injury and had no answers to Fonseca’s forehand.
(25) Learner Tien def. (8) Ben Shelton 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3
A thrilling all-American, all-lefty upset as the 20-year-old Californian reached his first Masters 1000 fourth round at his home event.
Tien out-aced Shelton 15-8 and won 82% of first-serve points, breaking only once in the decider (game 6) after Shelton appeared to fade.
Tien improved to 2-0 H2H and jumped to No. 23 in live rankings, and while he receives little attention compared to some other names, he is racking up impressive wins after impressive wins.
(4) Alexander Zverev def. (28) Brandon Nakashima 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-4
Zverev became the first man to 100 Masters 1000 wins this decade in a stern test, carving a decisive final-game break after Nakashima forced a decider.
I rate Nakashima and believe he could be a top 15 player with a few small improvements, so it’s a good win for Zverev.
Other notables from the day:
- Frances Tiafoe (21) def. Flavio Cobolli (15) 6-1, 6-2 — Tiafoe avenged his Acapulco final loss, snapping Cobolli’s six-match win streak for his first Top 20 win since last year’s Washington.
- (30) Arthur Fils def. Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 7-5 — Sets up Auger-Aliassime clash.
- (9) Felix Auger-Aliassime def. Gabriel Diallo 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3 — FAA improved to 13-2 since February (title + final + SF). Next: Fils.
- (18) Alejandro Davidovich Fokina def. (12) Jakub Mensik 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 — Advances to face Tien.
