Insider: Oilers Setting Up Trade With Andrew Mangiapane Deal

The Edmonton Oilers signed Andrew Mangiapane to a two-year, $3.6 million AAV contract in the offseason, but his performance has seemingly forced the organization’s hand. Expected to trade the forward in the next few days, rumors of a potential move being imminent are everywhere.

Sources like OilersNation, the Edmonton Journal’s Cult of Hockey, Pro Hockey Rumors, The Fourth Period, and NHL insiders like Frank Seravalli and David Pagnotta are all picking up the story that Mangiapane could be on the move.

With just 12 points in 49 games this season, Mangiapane has been a frequent healthy scratch. As a result, he’s looking for a better opportunity, and both sides are reportedly open to it, despite his no-movement clause being something that could prevent a trade.

The Fourth Period reported that the Oilers remain in talks with “a few teams,” and the expectation is that he’ll definitely be moved before the deadline. The delay could be the team’s cap constraints and need to use his salary for a corresponding move.

Frank Seravalli said on Frankly Hockey that the Oilers “cannot make a trade deadline acquisition between now and Friday without first moving him.” He suggested a deal could be completed in the next three or four days, freeing up around $3 million in cap space for this season and next. Seravalli says the lack of a deal is not for a lack of trying. It’s been a “grind” to move the contract, and the Oilers might need to attach an asset if they can’t move him straight up. Edmonton is seeking to avoid that scenario.

Pierre LeBrun reports the Edmonton Oilers are still trying to trade Andrew Mangiapane. Which teams are worth watching here?

Teams To Watch For in the Mangiapane Talks

Previous reports had Mangiapane linked to the Winnipeg Jets, Ottawa Senators, St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, and Vancouver Canucks. Now that the Oilers are reportedly looking at Rasmus Ristolainen, Mangiapane could be part of that trade.

No deal is reportedly signed off on and might not be one of the trades analysts believe were consummated over the Olympic break. Momentum is building with the trade freeze lifted.
