Inter have long identified Guglielmo Vicario as their top target to succeed Yann Sommer between the sticks. They are progressing in their pursuit in order to beat other teams keen on the goalie to the punch.
According to Fabrizio Romano (via Tribuna), the Nerazzurri have opened talks with his camp. The shot-stopper has okayed the destination and a return to Serie A in general. The officials will now start bargaining with his agent and especially with Tottenham.
There shouldn’t be problems on his personal terms, as Vicario is making about €2.5M, which is a modest figure for Inter standards, Calciomercato reports. Instead, it’ll be more challenging to come to terms with the Spurs. They got him from Empoli for nearly €20M and aim to turn a profit on him. His price tag is roughly €30M. There’s not much room to negotiate, even should a bargaining chip be included in the deal.
In the meantime, the Nerazzurri brass will soon meet with Sommer to relay that he’ll no longer be their starter next year. If he wished to stay and re-up his expiring deal, he’d be the no.2. It remains to be seen whether he’ll agree to that or if he’ll seize the opportunity to be a regular elsewhere, perhaps at Basel, in the twilight of his career.
Our Take on Inter and Vicario
Their main moves are often telegraphed, and that appears to be the case again here. However, Tottenham are a rather expensive boutique. It’s been a while since Serie A teams managed to buy from them. Plus, it’s not so sure their ownership will okay a large investment in a veteran, as they usually prefer to purchase youngsters.
