According to reports, former Team India legend Ricky Ponting will take the role of head coach for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025. This comes just two months after Ponting resigned from his seven-year-old stint with Delhi Capitals. It will be a rebuilding phase as Punjab Kings finished ninth in IPL 2024. After signing a multi-year deal with the franchise, he will be expected to now help the team rebuild itself to win matches.
Ponting would be Punjab Kings’ third head coach in four seasons, based on the team’s desire to gain stability. He has been given the authority to select his coaching staff with the utmost freedom, but whether Trevor Bayliss and Sanjay Bangar, who remained part of last season’s setup, continue to be a part of the job is not known. One of the first tasks for him would be to finalize the retained players as the retention rules of IPL 2025 are yet to be decided.

More to that, though, are the key performers in that team: purple cap winner Harshal Patel, India’s fast-bowler Arshdeep Singh, and overseas stars like Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow. Ponting has lots of IPL experience, winning Delhi Capitals to their first final in 2020 and recently guiding Washington Freedom to a Major League Cricket title will be a reason to opt for Punjab’s cause.
The team is also looking for a new captain, who last reached the IPL playoffs in 2014. The reason behind looking for a new skipper is that Shikhar Dhawan has retired. Ponting’s leadership will help the franchise transition through these critical times as it looks to regain its IPL 2025 spirits.
