IPL Teams Eye 2-Year Ban for Unavailable Overseas Stars

Before the big auction for the upcoming IPL 2025, a number of concerns arise between the franchises. All the teams raised a few issues to BCCI in the recent meeting. Reports suggest that IPL franchises are pushing for a two-year ban on overseas players who, after the auction, fail to make themselves available for the season without a valid reason. This move aims to ensure commitment and stability in team selections and reduce disruptions caused by unexpected player unavailability.

Teams’ Concerns and the Problen in the Last Year:

Reports indicate that IPL franchises are proposing a two-year ban for overseas players who become unavailable for the season after being purchased at the auction unless they have a valid reason. The franchises also want it to be mandatory for these players to register for the mega auction, rather than only entering mini-auctions with hopes of high bids.

Many IPL teams have faced issues when overseas players withdraw at the last minute, often citing personal reasons. Those withdrawals disrupt team strategies, which are often built around these key players, and force franchises to quickly find replacements from a limited pool of international talent.

This situation has negatively impacted team performance and overall planning. The sudden unavailability of these players leaves teams scrambling and affects their preparation for the season.

For instance, Harry Brook withdrew from the IPL 2024 to be with his grieving family after the death of his grandmother in February. This highlights the personal challenges players face but also underscores the need for better planning and commitment in team management.

Another Major Concern for the Franchises:

Franchises are facing issues when players bought at base price pull out after the auction. An example given was a player’s manager telling a franchise that the player could be available if offered more money. This led franchises to believe that some players and their managers might be trying to exploit the system, making it necessary for the IPL to implement stricter rules.

The franchises have suggested that the IPL should enforce checks to prevent this from happening. They are okay with new or lesser-known overseas players registering for mini-auctions but believe that prominent players should register for mega-auctions. This approach aims to ensure that major players commit to the auction process and reduce disruptions for the teams.

If a top player goes unsold in the mega auction, they could still enter the mini-auction for the following season. This system would help maintain fairness and stability, preventing last-minute changes that negatively impact team planning and performance.

Amidst all the concerns, agreements, and disagreements, the franchises had a long meeting with the BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. After the meeting, the BCCI Secretary said the decision would be made in a week or so. Now everyone is looking forward to the decision.
