India batter Ishan Kishan dedicated the T20 World Cup final win over New Zealand to his late sister and brother-in-law, who died in a tragic accident before the big-ticket clash in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Before the final, Kishan learned about the tragic accident in the family. The 27-year-old was distraught, and it was then that he received much-needed advice from Hardik Pandya. Since March 8 was also Women’s Day, Kishan dedicated the team’s win to his late sister.

“To be honest, before the game, I lost my cousin sister in a car accident. I played well for her. I spoke to Hardik bhai; he said to put the team ahead. I dedicate this win to her, and this was on Women’s Day, so it makes it all the more special,” Kishan was quoted as saying at the post-match press conference.

Having been kept away from the Indian team for close to two years, Kishan reflected on that phase and what it taught him.

“In these two years, the biggest thing I learned was to just keep doing your job and not think about the results. The skills don’t change much. If I scored a 200 before, the skills were there then and they are there now. But what matters is your approach. How much hunger do you have?

Kishan also expressed his admiration for Virat Kohli.

“So, in a way, I took a step back. Like I said, I like Virat bhai a lot, seeing how he has put his energy into the game for so many years. That work was the most important thing for me to understand – what can I change within myself? Because the ability is there,” he said.

On the night of the final, Kishan smashed a quickfire 54, a major contribution to the team’s win. The southpaw finished the World Cup as the fourth-highest run-scorer with 317 runs in nine games.
