Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka expressed his disappointment after their 51-run loss against England in the Super Eight match of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on February 22.
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Shanaka said: “Clearly, it’s very disappointing. It’s not that they bowled really well. We played some poor shots in critical intervals. In this World Cup, we have five main bowlers. I mean, including one all-rounder. So it is a nice attack to have, so I can restrict most of the sides to lower scores. The discussion was to take it deep. We have played a lot of cricket in this sort of conditions, it was about taking it deep and taking the positive options and the right options, which we didn’t take. So eventually it’s one bad game which is not affordable in a World Cup, but we need to bounce back in the next couple of games.”
Phil Salt’s 62 off 40 balls took England to 146/9 in their 20 overs. For Sri Lanka, Dunith Wellalage took three wickets.
In reply, none of the Sri Lankan batters could put up a fight, and England kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Finally, Sri Lanka were bundled out for 95 in 16.4 overs.
Shanaka said they are confident of better results in the upcoming matches. “As I mentioned, it’s the one bad game. The top four have done really well in the recent past, so I’m pretty sure that they will do well in the upcoming games,” he added.
Sri Lanka will face New Zealand on February 25.
