Indiana’s 2026-27 roster will be rebuilt this spring by second-year coach Darian DeVries, who will navigate the portal with executive director of basketball Ryan Carr and the Hoosier coaching staff.
Inside the Hall will examine some of the prospects who could make sense for the Hoosiers to pursue out of the portal. Up next: Alabama big man Aiden Sherrell.
Previously: Markus Burton, Rowan Brumbaugh, Adam Olsen, J.P. Estrella, Darren Harris
Numbers to know
70 career games at Alabama: 7.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.2 blocked shots and 0.7 assists in 16.1 minutes per game. Sherrell shot 53.2 percent from the field, 33.6 percent on 3-pointers and 65.3 percent from the free-throw line. Sherrell has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Background and potential fit
A 2024 McDonald’s All-American from Detroit, Michigan, who played at Prolific Prep in California, Aiden Sherrell was among the top bigs in the country in the 2024 recruiting cycle. He was ranked the No. 23 player nationally in his class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Now listed at 6-foot-10 and 255 pounds, Sherrell signed with Nate Oats and Alabama out of high school and spent the last two seasons playing for the Crimson Tide.
As a freshman in the 2024-25 season, Sherrell played a reserve role on an Elite Eight team at Alabama. He averaged 3.4 points and 2.7 rebounds over 36 games and was behind Cliff Omoruyi, Grant Nelson and Jarin Stevenson in the Crimson Tide rotation. He scored in double figures twice as a freshman, including 12 points in a win against Georgia and 10 points in a home loss to Florida.
With his path to minutes more clear, Sherrell took on an increased role in the 2025-26 campaign as a sophomore. He averaged 11.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.2 blocked shots and 1.1 assists in 23.9 minutes and started 34 of Alabama’s 36 games. He had three double-doubles, including 26 points and 13 rebounds in a double overtime win against Arkansas on February 18. He reached double figures in scoring in 20 games, including 11 of the last 12 contests.
Sherrell shot 64 percent this past season on 2s and also exhibited an ability to step out and knock down an occasional 3-pointer. He was 27-for-80 on triples, good for 33.8 percent.
In SEC play, his block percentage of 6.6 was seventh in the league, per KenPom.com, and for the season, he had the 36th-best block percentage in the country. He also did an excellent job of drawing fouls and converting from the stripe in SEC play. He had a free-throw rate (FTA/FGA) of 66.4 percent in conference games and shot 79.7 percent from the line.
Considered one of the top frontcourt players currently available in the transfer portal – he entered with a do-not-contact tag – Sherrell is a name linked to Indiana and fits the mold of the big man the Hoosiers need to compete in the Big Ten. Indiana was too often overmatched in the post and lacked rim protection in the first year of the Darian DeVries era.
