Jack Wilshere faces Luton fans after unacceptable display for 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient

Jack Wilshere faces Luton fans after their side’s unacceptable display for the 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient on Tuesday night.

Theo Archibald put the hosts ahead early in the second half, but Gideon Kodua headed in a 96th-minute corner to snatch a point for the Hatters.

Luton, who made eight changes, also saw an effort come back off the post through Jordan Clark, while Orient lost Josh Koroma to a first-half head injury.

The result sees Luton sit 7th in League One with 28 points from 19 games, 3 points from the playoff places, but 5th place Bolton and 6th place Stevenage have games in hand.

Leyton Orient are 12th with 25 points from 19 games played, 6 points from both the playoffs and the drop zone.

@AdamHenchy said after seeing the above video: “Just some context been following Luton all over the country for 20+ years definitely not a newbie fan Jack asked me to come down so I did I said the frustrations that are there for all to see with current state of performances he was agreeing with me and said give us time 👍🏻”

Wilshere said, per Luton Today: “I thought we never took control of the game. At half-time we’re having conversations with the staff saying it might be one of those games where we’re not going to get the control we want, we might not be able to put the ball down and I think it was.

“It was one of those nights where too many technical errors, too many times we gave the ball away and then you lose your rhythm, you lose your flow, they build momentum and they then get a goal in the second half and it was difficult. We dug in, of course it’s a lot easier when a team goes one-nil up and tries to protect the goal and don’t want to play anymore, so a disappointing night, but again, credit to the boys, they dug in again and it’s nice to score a set-piece as well.

“We have to find that consistency and if we want to be a team that’s up there and competing at the top end of this league, that’s what we need. We’re still chasing it, how you get there is by going through experiences like this, but then reviewing it on Thursday, sitting down and saying this is not good enough, this is not acceptable and looking at certain moments in the game.

“As it’s easy for a coach to stand here and say we weren’t good enough in every moment, but actually there probably were some good moments when we watch it back. We have to continue to build on that and show the players that as well and then ask for more consistency and how you get that is by training and working hard.

“If you want to dominate the ball you have to be clean with it, you have to look after it, you have to make the right pass at the right time and we’re still developing that, we’re still building that. Some games this season I’ve thought, wow we’re really good at that and we’ve had control, sometimes too much without enough threat behind, so we have to get that balance and that variation right, but it wasn’t there tonight.

“It can happen that you have a bad game or your touch isn’t quite right and then you need something else, you need to dig in and fight and make it into a game. We actually went 4-2-4 to try and get four players on their last line to be aggressive and sometimes Lamine (Fanne) would come low, but sometimes it’s not always about that, tactics and stuff, you need a little bit more, something different, where you have to fight or mix it up a little bit, play behind them.

“I don’t think we did that enough in the first half or really asked any questions of their back four and when we’ve got four players against four to try and be aggressive and get behind them, I didn’t think we did. We tried to do it in the second half but then they scored and sat back, so frustrating night, but hopefully a good point.”

Orient head coach Richie Wellens said, per East London Advertiser: “Excellent play from Theo. When you watch him play he does all the things that has been moulded in our team over a number of years. We still got players that are getting used to the way we play. I am delighted for Theo.

“I was happy with the way the fans welcomed him back. I see his work and his dedication. Ut has been a long road and he deserves that.

“I take my hat off for all the players. From Friday night this was going to be tough. Look I am honest guy and last Friday we were poor. But I am delighted with the performance tonight. We could have scored a few more.

“In terms of territory we were dominate but their subs made an impact. Theu had a really good impact on them and probably pushed them.

“I don’t think we deserved to concede it with the attitude and intensity we showed in the game. But from where were on Friday night, we will just keep it going in the league.

“With the injuries that we got, it did impact my thinking of the way played, I think we should be sat here with three points. Their squad (Luton) is a half a Premier League squad. They are bringing here Jordan Clark who has won promotion from the Championship.

“They only had one shot on target on our goal. We are gutted that their only chance was the goal. But ultimately it is down to us. We need to defend it better. But I don’t think they caused us too many problems.”

Here’s how Twitter users reacted as Jack Wilshere faces Luton fans after an unacceptable display for the 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient…

@_danhayward01: Don’t let the goal fool you, that was fucking awful

@Stalte3: Only one worse performance tonight – Sky Sports+. Shambles.

@DavidMosque: It’s no good to keep saying how hard they work in training. Lots of people work hard but are no good. Donkeys work hard, but they are still donkeys. It’s no measure of quality in itself.

@PCollinson24: ‘ We’re trying ‘ – how about trying to get the forwards to shoot!!! 96mins until an effort on target – utter shambles. Only made worse by, Captain Kalamity handing them their goal!

@z3r0h0p31: The club is rotten from the top. That’s where it all started.

@ajfkosovo: Absolutely desperate. A dreadful game of football, 2 very poor teams. We got out of jail. So many just don’t care. The team is rotten

@That_Mr_Raw: Was that Bloomfield or Wilshere talking?

@LutonEye: He’s got a big January window ahead!

@GaryGaryweir11: Why are we at 50/60% ffs!!!! that performance was a disgrace absolutely shite. You should be embarrassed and better up your game pretty quickly

@danlukeashby: Not surprising Luton started playing when Yates Naismith Saville and Brown were taken off. Walsh and Clark started to run the game Nordas got hold of the ball. We got Kodua and Morris on the ball higher up. It’s so obvious who Wilshere should be picking. 🤷🏻‍♂️ #LTFC #COYH

@kevlennon1: He needs to grow a ruthless streak before some of these supposedly more experienced players ruin the start of his managerial career…

@lutonedh: Absolutely pathetic performance bailed out by the same player again

@OhWhenTheTown: That was awful. Where would we be without Gideon 😂

@Ashtonltfc0: Our club captain is absolutely pathetic. His mate George is no better and our number 9 playing anywhere but up front. Awful game and very disappointing

@LutonsTactico: Not good enough but we can’t keep getting bailed out every week for much longer. Wilshere stuck his neck out for the captain and it failed miserably and his selections are terrible. Need to sort this out ASAP or my interest for the remainder of the season will be elsewhere.
