Despite the loss, the team came away with one positive. Making his 17th appearance with the Leafs, 24-year-old Jacob Quillan earned his first NHL point on Toronto’s sole marker.
Five minutes into the third period, Quillan got the secondary assist on Jake McCabe’s goal to put the Leafs on the board. Speaking after the game, the Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native shared what it meant to finally get on the scoresheet.

“Feels good to get that, it’s been a while,” Quillan said. “I’ve been feeling better every game, with my play and stuff, so looking to build. But at the end of the day, it’s about winning. So it’s just doing what I can to help the team win.”

Quillan made his NHL debut last season in a one-game call-up in January, and added a few more starts through this year, until finally earning a more consistent role this month. On Saturday, he logged 16:07 TOI, the most minutes he’s played in a game for the Leafs by over five minutes. He says it’s a testament to the work he’s been putting in.

“When I use my speed, I feel confident out there,” Quillan said. “When I handle the puck, and stuff like that. That being said, I still have a lot of things to work on, like my defensive side of the game. So just looking to build every game.”

Quillan originally signed with the Leafs in April 2024 as an undrafted prospect out of Quinnipiac University. Last season, he tallied 18 goals and 37 points in 67 games with the Toronto Marlies as a rookie. This year, owing to numerous call-ups, he’s played only 38 games in the AHL. Still, he’s managed an impressive 12 goals and 33 points across that span. At this year’s trade deadline, Quillan was assigned back to the Marlies to ensure his eligibility for AHL playoffs. The Marlies are currently third in the AHL’s North Division, with the top five teams qualifying for the postseason.

In the meantime, Quillan will likely remain with the Maple Leafs through their remaining eight games. Quillan and the Leafs next take to the ice on Monday to face the Anaheim Ducks.
