The 2024 IPL wrapped up successfully. Now, a mega action is all set to take place before IPL 2025. But before that, concern was raised over the mega auction and the player retention issue. At the IPL owners’ meeting with BCCI officials, there was extensive discussion about player retention and the potential need for a mega auction later this year. No agreement was reached during the lengthy meeting. Jay Shah later addressed the topic.
The Long Meeting:
The IPL franchises are split on whether to hold a mega auction before the next season. During a lengthy meeting with BCCI officials on Wednesday evening, some teams argued against the auction and preferred more player retention.
The discussion also covered the Impact Player rule. The franchises presented their views, but the final decision on these matters will rest with the BCCI, which will inform the teams of the outcome.
Additionally, the availability of overseas players for the next three-year cycle was discussed. Several franchises urged the BCCI to take a clear stance on this issue to prevent similar concerns in the future.
Jay Shah’s Words:
Jay Shah has confirmed that all issues with the franchises have been discussed and a decision will be made within a week. This will provide clarity on player retentions, the Impact Player rule, the Right to Match card, and the format of the IPL 2025 auction.
He said, “we’ve discussed everything at the meeting. We’ll make decisions in a week’s time”.
Parth Jindal After the Meeting:
After the meeting, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal summarized the differing views among team owners on key IPL issues. He provided insight into the varying opinions regarding major topics like player retention and auction formats.
He said, “We are not on the same page on many issues. I think the BCCI, in their wisdom, will decide (on retentions). The (BCCI) president and secretary will decide. Hopefully, by the end of August, we will get to know the rules for the next cycle.”
Franchise officials had productive discussions about the future of the IPL. Delhi Capitals’ co-owner Parth Jindal confirmed that he supports holding a mega auction, believing it will make the tournament more competitive.
He said, “I was surprised that there was a debate. Some people said that there should not be a mega auction at all and that there should be only smaller auctions. But I’m not in that camp. I feel that it evens the playing field and it’s very good for everyone. It makes the IPL what it is. It makes it competitive.”
