India has competed in two World Test Championship (WTC) finals, falling short in both. The latest defeat occurred in 2023 when Australia dominated India in England. Concerns were raised about whether India had adequate preparation time for the match, as the IPL 2023 had concluded just days before. In lieu of this, BCCI chief secretary Jay Shah assures a 15-day gap between the WTC 2025 finals and IPL 2025 finals for team India.
After winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the expectations are high on the men in blue for the Champions Trophy and World Test Championship both set in 2025. It will be interesting to see how Shah’s new promise will stand out in the long run for team India.
“The team didn’t reach late” Jay Shah confirms 15 day gap for WTC and IPL finals
Dispite questions surrounding the previous WTC finals, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah asserted that the interval between the IPL and the WTC Finals was sufficient, countering claims that the team arrived late.
He mentioned that in the future, if Team India reaches the finals, there will be a 15-day break between the two events. Despite the challenges, Shah highlighted that India deserves recognition for being the only team to have reached the finals twice.
“The team didn’t reach late for previous WTC finals. We had no choice. From now on, we will be having a 15-day gap between the end of IPL and the WTC final. But we should also appreciate the fact that we have qualified for the final twice,” Jay Shah told the Times of India.
How likely is India going to play the WTC finals?
India has faced setbacks in the World Test Championship (WTC) finals, losing to New Zealand in 2021 and Australia in 2023. However, in the current WTC cycle, India is leading the standings. If they maintain their top position, they are well-placed to qualify for the final once again.
Australia, currently in second place, is closely trailing India. The ongoing competition remains intense, and with their strong performance, India has a good chance of securing a spot in the finals and potentially achieving a different outcome this time.
