Jemimah Rodrigues Inspired by Men’s T20 World Cup Victory

The Indian women’s cricket team is gearing up for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, drawing inspiration from the recent triumph of the Indian men’s team. Jemimah Rodrigues, a key player for India, expressed her excitement and determination to replicate the success witnessed during the men’s tournament held in Barbados earlier this year.

A Moment of Inspiration

Reflecting on the men’s team’s victory, Jemimah Rodrigues recalled the electric atmosphere as Rohit Sharma and his teammates lifted the trophy, ending an 11-year title drought. “I remember watching the men’s final. We had a Test match against South Africa, and on Day 3, we stayed up until 12 or 1:30 in the night watching the match,” she shared during an interview.

The experience ignited a “desire and passion” within her team to pursue their own ICC trophy, which has eluded them in both 50-over and T20 formats. The Indian women’s team has yet to claim an ICC title, with their best finish in the T20 World Cup being runners-up to Australia in 2020. In the previous edition of the tournament last year, India reached the semifinals but fell short against Australia by just five runs.

The Road Ahead

As the tournament kicks off, India will face New Zealand on October 4. Despite mixed results leading up to this World Cup—losing series against Australia and England but bouncing back with victories over Bangladesh—Rodrigues remains focused on the process rather than dwelling on outcomes. “I do not want to think too much about the result,” she stated. “The dream is there, but we are focusing more on the process and what we need to do.”

In her career spanning 100 T20Is, Rodrigues has amassed 2,074 runs at an average of 30.50 and a strike rate of 114.26. She has scored 11 fifties with a top score of 76, showcasing her potential as a vital player for India in this tournament.

The Team’s Mindset

Rodrigues emphasized that while her team is known for its talkative nature, they were left silent and reflective after witnessing their male counterparts’ success. “When that happened, we all fell silent,” she recalled. This moment prompted discussions among team members about when they might experience lifting a trophy themselves alongside skipper Harmanpreet Kaur.

The Indian women’s team is determined to channel this inspiration into their performance on the field. With renewed vigor and a clear focus on their objectives, they aim to make history by securing their first ICC title.
