Jemimah’s Passion Fuels India’s ICC T20 World Cup Dream

With the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 set to begin in the UAE on October 3, India’s young star Jemimah Rodrigues shared her thoughts on the highly anticipated tournament, the India-Pakistan rivalry, and her aspirations for Team India. Speaking candidly in an interview with Star Sports, Rodrigues discussed the challenges of adapting to the UAE’s intense heat, her role in the team, and her hopes of seeing India lift the trophy.

Adapting to UAE Conditions and Facing Pakistan

Rodrigues highlighted the physical toll of preparing for the tournament in the harsh heat of the UAE. “The first day was tough. We weren’t sure what to expect,” she admitted. Despite the intense conditions, she remains optimistic that the team will adapt in time. “We’re trying to spend more time outside to condition our bodies to the weather,” she added, reflecting the team’s focus on preparation and readiness.

The India-Pakistan rivalry remains one of the most exhilarating fixtures in world cricket, and Rodrigues expressed her pride in being part of such historic contests. “What makes the India-Pakistan game so exciting and competitive is the fans. The stadium atmosphere is electric, and being part of it is a dream come true for me,” she shared. As a player who grew up watching these clashes on TV, the magnitude of the occasion is not lost on her. Rodrigues also emphasized the responsibility of playing in these high-pressure matches, adding, “There’s an added responsibility when you’re out there — to make sure Team India wins.”

The Desire to Win for Team India

As a crucial part of India’s squad, Rodrigues takes great pride in her role within the team. While she is focused on individual performances, her ultimate goal remains crystal clear: helping India secure victory. “For me, it’s all about assessing the conditions and playing the situation. I just want to keep it simple and do whatever it takes to help the team win,” Rodrigues stated. Her passion for the team shines through as she described her commitment to giving everything for India: “For me, whenever it comes to the team, I go and give my life out there.”

The Strength and Bond of Team India

Rodrigues also spoke about the unique energy and camaraderie within the Indian team. “This team is special. There’s something in this team, a fire to win, and at the same time, an energy and bond that’s very special,” she said. The blend of youthful talent and experienced leadership, with players like captain Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, has created a well-balanced and determined unit.

Her admiration for her senior teammates was evident, especially when speaking about Mandhana and Kaur. “Smriti understands the game and her role so well. As the vice-captain, her inputs are invaluable,” Rodrigues said, referring to the experienced left-handed batter as both a leader and a mentor. On Kaur, she remarked, “Harman di is a big-match player. We’ve seen it time and again — from her 171 in the World Cup to her performances in key matches. As a team, we want to win it for India and for her.”

Overcoming Challenges and Looking Forward

Reflecting on her personal journey, Rodrigues opened up about her 53-run match-winning performance against Pakistan in a previous World Cup match. She admitted feeling low on confidence due to a run of poor form before that game but credited her ability to focus on contributing to the team rather than her past performances. “I was nervous, especially since it was an India-Pakistan game, but once the game started, my focus shifted to how I could contribute,” she said.

Rodrigues also touched on her admiration for New Zealand’s Sophie Devine, whom she respects both as a player and a person. “I’ve always admired her game. We’ve prepared well to bowl against her, and now it’s just about executing our plans,” she said.

The excitement surrounding the tournament is palpable, with fans eagerly awaiting India’s opening clash against New Zealand on October 4. For Rodrigues and her teammates, the next few weeks will be about executing their game plans, overcoming challenges, and hopefully lifting the trophy for India.
