Things started well for the Jets when Kyle Connor banked the puck off the boards onto the tape of Adam Lowry, springing him on a shorthanded breakaway. Lowry beat Leevi Merilainen five-hole to open the scoring with his third of the season at 12:08. The goal tied Lowry for the most shorthanded goals in franchise history.
Thomas Chabot tied the game 1-1 on the power play at 15:03. Brady Tkachuk worked the puck out front to Chabot, who fired a shot past Connor Hellebuyck despite his stick exploding on the play.
The game remained tied after 20 minutes, with Ottawa holding a 9-5 edge in shots.
Chabot netted his second of the game to give the Senators their first lead 5:56 into the second period. Hellebuyck, mid-sprawl, attempted a two-pad stack, but Chabot lifted the puck over the 6-foot-4 goaltender.
Drake Batherson added his 16th of the season on the power play at 15:50, rifling a shot past Hellebuyck’s blocker to make it 3-1 Ottawa.
The Senators carried a 3-1 lead into the second intermission while outshooting Winnipeg 18-10.
Kyle Connor pulled the Jets within one halfway through the third period, slamming home Dylan DeMelo’s slap shot that rang off the post for his 19th of the year.
Ottawa restored its two-goal cushion with under five minutes remaining when Claude Giroux snuck a floater past Hellebuyck for his eighth of the season, a goal the Jets’ netminder would want back.
