Another Swede has landed in Winnipeg.
TRANSACTION: The #NHLJets have reassigned D – Alfons Freij from Timra (SHL) to the Manitoba Moose (AHL).
Freij’s season came to an end on March 14 when his Swedish club failed to make the playoffs, and he now gets an opportunity with the Jets’ AHL affiliate over their remaining 16 regular-season games as they push for a playoff spot.
Manitoba was in action this morning for its final school day game of the season but fell 4-0 to the Milwaukee Admirals in front of 6,000+ screaming kids, a team they’ll face again tomorrow. It remains to be seen if Freij will make his AHL debut in that matchup or this weekend against the Tucson Roadrunners.
The 20-year-old is one of several Swedes either playing with the Jets or in Manitoba, including defenceman Elias Salomonsson (WPG) and forwards Isak Rosen (WPG), Gustav Nyquist (WPG), Fabian Wagner (MB), Samuel Fagemo (MB), and David Gustafsson (MB). There’s also Stockholm product Sascha Boumediene, who played alongside Freij at the 2026 World Junior U-20 Championships and is currently at Boston University.
Freij, a Sölvesborg, Sweden native, recorded six goals and five assists for 11 points in 42 games with Timrå IK this season. At the 2026 World Juniors, he totaled seven assists in seven games, helping Sweden capture gold for the first time in 14 years.
The six-foot-one defenceman was selected 37th overall in the second round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.
