Joe Root surpasses Jayawardhane’s score in Test cricket
During England’s first innings against the West Indies at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on July 18, former England Test captain Joe Root surpassed Mahela Jayawardene to become one of the top run scorers in Test cricket history.
Root achieved this milestone after the West Indies elected to bowl first. With a total of 11,818 runs to his name, he exceeded Jayawardene’s career tally of 11,814 Test runs.
Currently ranked ninth on the all-time list, Root now sets his sights on reaching the remarkable milestone set by India’s cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, who leads with an astonishing 15,921 Test runs. Root’s consistency and contribution to English cricket have solidified his place among the sport’s elite batsmen, marking a significant achievement in his career.
The 33-year-old is only 49 runs away from surpassing West Indies great Shivnarine Chanderpaul, a milestone he may achieve during England’s second innings. Meanwhile, Root is currently chasing another cricket legend, Alastair Cook, who holds the record for the most Test runs scored by an English player with 12,472 runs.
When Joe Root said “England shouldn’t have toured Australia”
England suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat in the 2021/22 Ashes series, with skipper Joe Root and Head Coach Chris Silverwood facing significant criticism for their selection decisions and game tactics.
The team also grappled with COVID-19-related quarantines, leading to management decisions to rest and rotate players to combat mental fatigue. Root has since admitted that England might have considered skipping the series altogether.
“Arguably we shouldn’t have gone last time, should we in retrospect?” he said as quoted by Wisden. “Thinking of Covid, it was about keeping the lights on last time we went,” Root added.
