John Cena Breaks Down MLB’s New ABS Challenge System

John Cena explains what fans can expect from Major League Baseball’s new automated challenge system.

Cena appeared in a Netflix promo ahead of MLB Opening Night. Netflix will stream three major MLB events this season as part of its new three-year deal with the league. The 2026 MLB season will also feature a new automated balls and strikes system (ABS) during games.

Cena spoke about his passion for baseball, then explained how Major League Baseball’s new ABS system will impact the game.

“Look, I’ve spent my whole life in the public eye, and I know something about putting on a show,” Cena began.

“But this year, the production is adding something new. For the first time, Major League Baseball is bringing automated balls and strikes to the regular season,” Cena said. “For real.”

“The umpire is still out there calling the game, just like always. And listen, nobody appreciates a good performance more than me. But here’s the thing about the human eye, even the best only catches so much. ABS changes all that. The truth is just there.”

Is there a limit on ABS challenges?

The batter, pitcher, and catcher are the only players who can appeal, up to two per game, per team. If the challenge is correct, the call clips and the challenging team keeps their challenge. However, if the call is wrong, that team loses one of their challenges.

Netflix will exclusively stream three major events during the 2026 MLB season. The streaming giant aired the season-opening night game between the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants. Netflix will also stream the T-Mobile Home Run Derby in July, and the annual “Field of Dreams” game in August.
