John Cena’s WrestleMania Hosting Role Wasn’t The Original Plan

John Cena being named host of WrestleMania wasn’t part of WWE’s original plan, and new backstage details show the company made the call much later than fans might think.

When Cena first announced his retirement run, the idea internally was that he would make limited in-ring appearances as part of his farewell tour. At that stage, hosting WrestleMania wasn’t even on the table. The focus was simply on wrapping up his career with select matches and appearances. That plan changed as WrestleMania season got closer.

As WWE continued putting the show together, leadership reportedly approached Cena about taking on a bigger role than originally planned. The hosting role came together after earlier creative discussions had already taken place, showing this wasn’t mapped out from the beginning.

During the discussion about when the shift happened on WrestleVotes Radio, it was explained that Cena didn’t hear about the hosting role until weeks later.

“Sources indicate that the idea of Cena being involved in this year’s event as the host was not presented to him until early February, marking a significant shift from what was initially expected.”

That timeline makes it clear WWE made a late change, likely to strengthen the overall presentation of WrestleMania by putting one of its biggest names front and center. Cena has always been a major draw for WWE, so expanding his role heading into WrestleMania adds more attention to the event and raises questions about how involved he might actually be once the show starts.

With WrestleMania getting closer, fans will now be watching to see whether this hosting role stays simple — or turns into something bigger once Cena steps into the spotlight.

Do you think WWE made the right call by adding John Cena as WrestleMania host late in the process, or should his retirement run have stayed focused only on matches?
